A troubled start for Yamaha's MotoGP campaign has left its star rider, Fabio Quartararo, feeling uncertain about the team's direction. In an exclusive interview, Quartararo expressed his concerns, stating, "I don't think there's a clear path forward yet." This comes after a challenging Friday at the Thai Grand Prix, where Yamaha's new V4 project has struggled to find its feet.
The team's technical issues and lack of speed have been a cause for concern, with Quartararo ending Friday as the fastest Yamaha rider, but a disappointing 16th place, over a second off the pace. He acknowledged the difficulty, saying, "We know how hard it is to gain just two tenths of a second, especially after two days of testing." Despite his efforts, Quartararo remains "very far away" from the competition.
But here's where it gets controversial: Quartararo believes Yamaha lacks a clear strategy for developing the V4 M1. He warns that a new engine might not be ready until May's French Grand Prix, leaving the team in a tricky situation. "I don't think there's a clear direction yet. We're searching for it, but I'm doing my best with the team," he added.
And this is the part most people miss: Quartararo admits he was "too optimistic" about the bike's potential coming into this season. The 2021 world champion has had a frustrating winter, and now he's taking a more calm and measured approach. "I've talked to my team, and I realize I was overly optimistic. I want to avoid mistakes and protect my image," he explained.
His best lap in Friday's practice was almost half a second slower than last year's performance on the inline-four M1. Quartararo now faces a tough Q1 group on Saturday, including Ducati's Pecco Bagnaia and Honda's Luca Marini.
So, what's next for Yamaha and Quartararo? Will they find their way out of this technical maze? And how will Quartararo's more cautious approach impact his performance? These are questions that only time will answer. What are your thoughts? Do you think Yamaha can turn things around, or is this the beginning of a longer-term struggle?
