How a J-Pop Star Made This Outback Artist Go Viral in Japan | Jason McCarthur's Unbelievable Journey (2026)

In a remarkable turn of events, Broken Hill artist Jason McCarthur finds himself in the spotlight after an unexpected encounter with J-pop sensation Fujii Kaze. This story begins with a simple email that would change everything for McCarthur—a request to buy one of his unique tote bags.

In late 2024, as Jason checked his inbox, he was puzzled by the unusual email. It seemed strange for several reasons: first, the sender was located overseas, and second, he received a nearly identical email shortly after the first. Initially, he dismissed it as a likely scam, but more inquiries about his tote bags began to flood in. To his surprise, he quickly sold out of his initial stock, prompting him to order another 100 bags. Just a day later, those too vanished into the hands of eager customers, and soon he found himself with 30 pre-orders for additional bags.

But this was just the beginning of an incredible journey. Unknown to McCarthur at that time, Japanese pop star Fujii Kaze had been seen in a documentary carrying one of his tote bags. Suddenly, thousands of fans from Kaze's massive following—living a staggering 7,000 kilometers away—became interested in the artist from the Australian outback. This unexpected brush with fame culminated in McCarthur securing an exhibition in Tokyo earlier this year.

The connection to Kaze started when he filmed a music video in Broken Hill for his hit song "Hana," released in November 2023, which has since amassed over 71 million views on YouTube. During the video shoot, the production team visited McCarthur's shop on Argent Street to gather supplies and souvenirs. While chatting with one of the crew members, McCarthur was unaware that their purchase of a tote bag featuring one of his cityscape designs would soon lead to widespread attention.

Months later, when Kaze was spotted sporting the tote bag in a documentary exclusive to Japan, McCarthur was completely oblivious to the buzz it would create. He initially thought the influx of messages from enthusiastic fans was nothing more than spam. "It all felt so random. I assumed someone was playing a prank on me," he recalled. With genuine confusion, he turned to his wife, expressing his bewilderment over the situation. "We were driving the post ladies crazy with our orders!"

Since then, McCarthur estimates he has sold over 15,000 tote bags. The spike in demand encouraged him to reach out to a Japanese reseller named Hiroko Yasutomi, who had been among the first to inquire about purchasing the bags. Their friendship blossomed as they discussed future possibilities, including McCarthur’s long-held dream of hosting an exhibition abroad. To his astonishment, Yasutomi delivered on her promise, discovering a gallery cafe in Shibuya, Tokyo, that was eager to showcase his artwork.

"We had to finance everything ourselves, but we decided to take the leap," McCarthur explained. Until this moment, a trip to Japan had never crossed their minds. In early January, Jason, his wife Amy, and their two daughters embarked on this exciting adventure to bring his dream to fruition.

During the exhibition, one fan was so touched after meeting him that she shed tears, sharing her overwhelming emotions. “I thought to myself, 'I'm just Jason McCarthur from Broken Hill; I’m no celebrity,'” he reflected, still in disbelief over the impact of his work. Looking ahead, he plans to establish an online platform to sell his art, expanding his reach even further.

McCarthur’s shop in Broken Hill is not just a retail space; it serves as his creative studio where he paints amidst the bustling business. Balancing a full-time operation while raising two teenage daughters, this shop often becomes his sanctuary for artistic expression. "Depending on how busy the store is, it might take me a few days to finish a painting," he shared.

Much of his inspiration derives from the beauty of the outback. "I enjoy incorporating color and storytelling into my art. If something catches my eye, whether it’s football, flowers, or landscapes, I’m eager to give it a try,” he says passionately.

Art has also provided McCarthur with a means to navigate challenging times related to his mental health. He takes well-being seriously and has cultivated an "open door" policy at his shop for anyone in need of a listening ear. "Sometimes, you feel like you’re hitting your head against a wall with every obstacle thrown your way, and it can be hard to see a silver lining without support around you. I remind people that if my door is open, I’m here to talk to them."

As McCarthur continues to explore new horizons in his artistic journey, one can only wonder what other surprises await him in the ever-evolving world of art and culture.
