The rise of Cannes as an animated powerhouse is a relatively recent phenomenon, with earlier breakthroughs like 'My Life as a Zucchini' and 'Mirai' ushering in sophisticated international fare into awards conversations. However, programers were initially slow to embrace these gains, with local producers unions criticizing Cannes for not programming a single animated title in its main selections as recently as 2023.
The response to this criticism was swift, with market momentum driving the success of 'The Most Precious of Cargoes' in competition and 'Flow' emerging from Un Certain Regard to become a global breakout, drawing 8.2 million admissions worldwide and winning the Oscar. These successes helped open the floodgates for 10 animated titles premiering this year, with six of them playing in competition at Annecy. The alignment between Cannes and Annecy has strengthened the wider ecosystem, with producers like Miyu Prods. founder Emmanuel-Alain Raynal benefiting from the festivals' prestige.
Raynal explains that Cannes provides broader legitimacy with companies, key talent, and financiers, while Annecy anchors the animation world. This synergy has led to larger co-productions, broader financing opportunities, and greater international visibility, all feeding back into further festival success. Charades co-founder Yohann Comte notes a broader wave of ambitious adult animation, with festivals becoming more open to it. Visibility is reshaping the market, with distributors and sales agents paying attention to successful titles, leading to increased minimum guarantees and financiers backing ambitious projects.
Cannes is now a place people look for animation, with playing there opening doors and lowering resistance. This shift has led to a fundamental change in the industry, with a move away from the old logic of reserving one family slot for kids. Directors' Fortnight head Julien Rejl, who selected three titles from around 30 submissions, emphasizes the festival's commitment to filmmakers and authors, regardless of format. The success of animated films at Cannes has also led to a reevaluation of the industry's approach to animation, with a focus on quality and ambition rather than tokenism.
